Ajax flew out of two European cups in two months. Super teams 2019 are no more
Europa League Ajax Europa League
For more than one season, the miracle did not last.
It is unlikely that we will ever forget this: Ajax knocked out the playoffs of the previous Champions League Real and Juventus and did not get into the finals very dramatically, losing to Tottenham at home.
That team was very fond of and, fortunately, they didn’t buy it all. The losses of de Ligt and de Jong are palpable, but without Dolberg, Sinkgraven or Chenet, the Ajax could well do even further. The club bought a lot of young people again, pulled Promes from Seville and rented Babel. It is unlikely that the extravaganza was expected from Ajax. I just wanted to make some more noise.
But what happened afterwards.
• Already at the beginning of the season it was alarming – Ajax hesitantly entered the group stage of the Champions League, playing 2: 2 and 3: 2 with PAOK, and then scoring just two goals to APOEL;
• At the group stage, a powerful start – twice 3-0 over Lille and Valencia, and as a result – absenteeism from the group;
• At the first stage of the Europa League – departure from Getafe;
• In the championship, 65 goals were scored in 23 matches (almost three on average per game), and the gap from second place was only three points.
To save “Ajax” in the Europa League, a squad was released for the return game with “Getafe”, where there were only three players older than 23 years old (Babel, Tadic, Onana). The names of four others will not say anything to those who watched Ajax exclusively in European competitions.
For example, the 19-year-old Serginho Dest and the 20-year-old Per Scheurs are defenders who have seriously played for Ajax only this season. Or 22-year-old Karel Eiting, who is not very often involved in games for the main team. Or, in general, 17-year-old Ryan Gravenberch is the youngest Ajax footballer in the history of the Dutch championships. Of these, only Eiting had the experience of playing in the last Champions League and limited himself to 90 minutes of the match with AEK.
Eiting, by the way, scored the winning goal in the match with Getafe, but this was not enough for the overall victory – 2: 1 at home after 0: 2 away.
There are many problems. These are injuries of Ziesh, Neres and Promes (Quincy, however, came out to play in the second half), this is the ineligibility of other players, this is the lack of a mental leader, and now also the absence of the brightest matches like a rout in Madrid or a drama with Tottenham. Everything got bored.
But an even more annoying feeling of a miracle too quickly faded. With some Spaniards, “Ajax” could not cope in the decisive game of the Champions League group, with others – in the playoffs of LE. Back in May, even before the Champions League final, everyone was talking about Ajax. Who would know that in the next season the club will not play in European competitions at all in the spring.
